We returned to Millhouses in Sheffield to carry out a re decoration of a Hall, Stairs and Landing. Millhouses is steeped in history and is one of our favourite locations in Sheffield to carry out our Painting and Decorating projects. In the late 12th century Robert Fitz Ranulf gave land for the establishment an abbey, just south of Millhouses at Beauchief. Over time most the area now covered by Millhouses had been given to the abbey by the De Ecclesall family. One of the gifts to the monks was the Ecclesall Corn Mill. This mill existed at least as early as 1280 and considerable remnants of it can still be seen at the north end of Millhouses Park.
OK... Brief history lesson over.
The customer specified that the old, and many layers of paint should be stripped back to its bare state and re painted. The main reason for this was to get its crafted moldings on this side of the staircase nice and sharp again. This was going to be an interesting and time consuming task.
Stage 1
We burnt the old paint off the stairs with a heat gun. This safely stripped the paint back to its original state. After the many layers of paint were burnt off we then prepared back to a smooth finish.
Stage 2
All the bare wood was to be primed in Johnstone's Advanced Stain block Primer,then filled and caulked. The team at Drew Decor then applied two more coats of undercoats before the final two coats of Satinwood was applied, a total of five coats.
Stage 3
As the primer was expertly applied, one other team member carried out the sanding of ceilings, walls and the rest of the wood work. As usual this was carried out with the Mirka Deros Dustless sander. You can find out more about the Mirka Deros Dustless sander on our blog Dustless sanding.
The ceilings and walls had been newly skimmed with plaster. We applied a mist coat to all bare plaster before applying two coats of Johnstones Soft Sheen. You can see how to paint bare plaster at our blog How to Paint Bare Plaster. We opted for the Soft sheen as it is perfect for high traffic areas. The Soft sheen can be wiped clean of any dirt or stains, perfect durability and great if you have kids or eager pets. The rest of the wood work was primed with an oil based undercoat and finished with two coats of oil based satinwood. Before any painting was undertaken we unscrewed and took off all door fixings and fixed back after all painting was complete.
Stage 4
The final job was to varnish the hand rail. After the correct preparation we applied two glorious coats of oil based gloss varnish to give it the ultimate sheen and protection. The team at Drew Decor really enjoyed working on this Victorian property in Millhouses, Sheffield. The preparation was intense but after we had completed the burning off, sanding down and filling, the painting was straight forward. A great success.
