If you have damp or mould in your property it is important to get rid of it. Damp and mould can affect your health. The first thing to do is to find the source of the problem. Damp and mould are caused by excess moisture. Moisture in buildings can be caused by rising damp, damaged guttering, blocked down pipes, roof damage and many more reasons. Condensation forms when the air cant hold any more moisture. For example the steam from a shower.
We have seen so many examples of this when carrying out painting and decorating projects in Sheffield. The top two are:
Not having the heating on when cold.
Not having the window open when showering. The extractor fan in the shower room is never strong enough for the amount of steam.
So we can prevent most of this by:
Opening a window slightly when showering.
Turning the heating on when cold. This is particularly hard for the typical Yorkshire man.
Fixing leaky gutters and downpipes.
Once you have fixed the source of the damp you can then get rid of the mould.
Take these steps:
Step 1
Remove all visible signs of mold with Zinsser Mould Killer and allow to dry.
Step 2
Prepare the surface area by sanding down, filling any defects and re sanding down. Then allow to dry.
Step 3
Prime surface area with Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer and allow to dry.
Step 4
At this point you can apply two to three coats of emulsion to the surface area.
If it is an area that is susceptible to mould you can apply two to three coats of Zinsser Perma White.
Step 5
Tidy up the work area and admire the work you have done.
