Preparation - The job people hate to do!
Preparation is the most important stage of decorating, known as the job people hate to do, in fact it should really be Preparation, Painting and Decorating. If you get the prep work right the rest is a breeze!
Before any preparation takes place the room must be organised, furniture moved out if possible and floors and furniture protected. Start at the top and work down. Sand down ceilings, coving, walls and wood work making sure all cracks and pop holes are raked out. Use different grades of sandpaper for different surfaces for example I would use 80 grade for ceilings and walls and a fine 180 grade for the wood work.
Once the sanding has been done fill all cracks and holes. There are different types of filler for different cracks/holes. A powder filler for large areas. A ready mixed filler for pop holes etc. And a fine surface filler for filling out any brush strokes for the ultimate finish. Caulk all corners. For example tops of skirting boards, sides of door frames etc.
Once all filling has been done sand down ceilings, wall wood work again with a fine sand paper. If any holes have sunk, re fill and sand down when dry.
After all prep work has been undertaken hoover all dust away before proceeding with painting. After all prep work is finished the paint can be applied.
