How to Paint Bare Plaster
Updated: May 28, 2018
If you are thinking of taking on a Painting and Decorating project yourself, this decorating tip will help you paint bare plaster. This is how the professionals do it.
First of all make sure the plaster is totally dry before applying paint and free of dust.
If there are any dark patches this could mean the plaster is still drying out.
Protect flooring and furniture with dust sheets to stop paint splashes, drips, and spray.
Apply one coat of good quality matt emulsion paint to surface, this is called a mist coat. You can thin the emulsion paint down by adding 10% to 20% water, this will allow the emulsion paint to soak into the bare plaster. First cut in the edges with a brush then roll the rest. We recommend Johnstones Trade Covaplus for this.
Once the mist coat has been applied and has fully dried you can then sand all the surface down with the correct light grit sandpaper.
Once the surface has been sanded down you can then check for imperfections, cracks and holes. Fill the holes, cracks and pop holes with the correct filler. We recommend Tou Pret, Easi-Fill and Red Devil Onetime depending on the size.
Once the filler has fully dried you can then re sand-down the surface.
Other problems may show up at this point, for instance if there has been a water leak, the water damage will stain through the emulsion looking like a tea coloured stain. This can be stain blocked. You can find out how to do this on our How to paint over water stains Blog.
At this stage when all paints and fillers are dry and sanded down, you can apply two coats of good quality emulsion to the surface and the job is done. We highly recommend using Johnstones Trade Paints.
